The rumour that the PS4 won't be backwards compatible have been around since the tech specs were leaked. Aside from the obvious loss of all disk based and PSN based games from the get go, the main problem is then brand loyalty or lack there of.
It's no secret that I've played with egg boxes from time to time, but I always come back to the PS3. Why? Friends. I didn't have any on the Xbox and the thought of buying XBL games filled me with dread, simply because I have so many PSN games that I'd lose.
But that same can be said for the PS4, in that I'd lose all those games I've spent years buying and playing. So now Sony are relying on brand loyalty in the hope that you will buy a PS4. So that leads me to one very important question, how will you be affected by the lack of backwards compatibility?
