So far this year there are plans for the next Xbox (durango), PlayStation 4 (orbis), Ouya (android based), The Steam Box (linux based), Game Stick (android based) and now the Shield from Nvidia (android based).
Thats five consoles designed to work directly on your TV, and one hand held.
The first one out of the blocks will be be Game Stick or Ouya, and that will determine the fate of the Shield. If the android platforms really take off, then it could be a haven for indie games. But I somehow feel that it'll be taken over by dedicated publishers and developers.
While I like the idea of being able to play android games with both a joypad and a TV, I think that dedicated 720p or 1080p games will be thin on the ground at first, and unless support for these consoles and hardware comes thick and fast, I think it could fail and the android experiment might be over. Microsoft and Sony have both been in the market for a long long time, they know their stuff, and they'll be hard to take on.
