I'm reading here and there about developers running out of steam on this generation, so I wonder if we're really ready for another generation.

We know roughly that the PS4 will be AMD and Radion 7670 based, so it will again be slightly lower spec than a decent PC, but dont forget that games consoles dont have operating system overheads, and can usually squeeze more out of the hardware.

Now gamers are always asking "when"? The answer is most likely next year.

My question is... Is that soon enough?
Personally I'm waiting for the next gen to replace my trusty old faulty (blu-Ray) PS3. If it dies before then, then I'll probably for-go buying another until the PS4 is out.

If we dont hear anything at games-com in 5 days, then it will certainly be next year.

But why? You dont need a supercomputer to make good game. With new gen all you will get is more sequels revamped for more hardware power which ultimately would mean more sloppy coding as why bother optimising this shit will handle it. Not looking forward.

Not so KK, if anything it will make cross platform games even easier to make, they'll be running x86 CPU's and open GL / Direct X hardware.

Make a PC game... tweak it once for 720 and PS4. Or maybe they don't even have to go that far, just downscale the graphics, and add in PSN/XBL components and ship it.

Who on earth gives a shit about cross platform games but the publisher?

In fact as BC2 and BF3 have shown crossplatform development only makes it worse for everyone but the publisher.

100% agree with this.

The only game makers moaning about lack of next-gen are the ones that solely rely on pretty graphics etc to sell games. The current hardware is more than adequate if publishers had an ounce of insight and allowed developers to be creative instead of churning out the same shit with better graphics.

Developers can make games cheaper at the end of a hardware cycles because they have established engines, so this is the best time to innovate. When new hardware comes along, new engines will be needed as well.

I would like to see this hardware stick around beyond next year then publishers might have to start greenlighting some innovation instead of relying on regurgitation...

Why worry about a new console though anyway, not being funny but ya got a gfx card and 8 core cpu sitting in ya pc now doing nothing and it will exceed any console that comes out in the next 10 years.

I dunno - i'm going right off console gaming, if i'm on its on dc universe, i really would rather play on a pc as of late...

I think cross-platforming is a bit to tachnical to implement for the most part, it has alot of overheads, it's not as simple as making the base game and "sticking it on ps4 or 720" and with certain companies they already have issues just porting games, never mind making them work together.

I read many devs on twitter complaining about how more complicated games have become and less buttons to play with in controls.. and how certain companies want certain features.

I doubt you'll see any cross-platform for along time and quite frankly who cares.
Just buy it for what platform you enjoy, cross-platform play is a great concept, but it just technically doesn't work properly.

ps4? id predict 2013/august time, about a year from now.

ill not go back to PC gaming, its far too much effort for the enjoyment, not that building a machine isnt fun! but all that messing about getting things compatible no ta. and as for the elitist attitude from a lot of PC players too i can do without that. i had a PC and playstation 1 at the same time and loved both of them.

im not sure about getting another console though, i swore this would be the last one i would shell out for. its gonna have to show me something pretty awesome to cough up. if its all digital too i really dont like that idea. as my mate tom once said you'll get to the point where you never actually own anything

ITS A COMMIE PLOT LOLZ =))
An explosion now and then is nice. Keeps the mind sharp,

LOL Pud.

Yeah, we'll see who ends up with a new console.
At the end of the day (Cliché) it's just natural to upgrade and there is nothing wrong in doing so.

I think they should seriously look at the price though, if what dave posted in that ps4 rumor thread are indeed the specs, it's a couple of hundred pounds worth of hardware.
If they come out with 500 quid, u might aswell get a pc lol.

What i miss about consoles is the tight knit community (for example mess-hall) and then just sitting/chillin with the controls.
