Some tips for UT new comers.

1. Spend some time playing against really spazzy bots. You'll get used to the maps, the movement system and targeting. You'll also find out about the weapons and their alt fire modes, including how to properly operate a Redeemer and how to use the translocator. Practicing all that online without knowing what you're doing will cause you to be dead a lot.

2. Once you know your way around the map, put the bots on the top level (or the one below if you're feeling short-tempered). Once you're more or less holding your own, go online and you'll find you get raped less often, which tends to be more fun.

3. Stick to a game type for a while. With all the possible combinations and the rate at which user-contributed content is going to start arriving, the possibilities are huge and if you don't limit yourself you'll never get good at any of them.

4. If you're moving sideways, hitting jump causes you to dodge. If you see players online keep skipping sideways, that's what they're doing. If you hit jump twice in fairly quick succession, you'll do a double-jump. I'm still getting used to UT3, but it seems to be that you can also wall-dodge - hit jump near a wall, move sideways and hit jump again (all done very quickly). The result is you jump, and then dodge off the wall. You can also jump when on a lift in order to get a big boost up. There are already mods out that further extend the movement system. I'm sure others will come too. It all takes some practice - I expect to be spending hours running around empty maps just getting used to the movement system.

5. Pick a couple of maps and really learn them inside out. Using dodging, lift-jumping and other moves, you'll find fast routes around the maps, giving you an advantage against all the horrid teenagers whose reactions are 20 times faster than yours but who can't be bothered to learn maps properly.

6. Change your jump button from the default X. I've just changed mine to L2 and you can tell the difference straight away. It controls so much easier. Seriously, you have to give this a try.

Don't play 1v1, it is incredibly boring. UT3 is all about fast action not walking around a map for half hour trying to find someone

FOA: RV: how did you morph into that huge character last night. Does it do it automatically after so many kills or something?

Sorry for the n00b question but I only downloaded the store content and UT3 Mod content last night so hadn't played any of the new maps or mods before our games last night
