How the Plane Leaderboards work.

I designed it to be about more than kills because that doesn't make you a good pilot per say. It track these, Time in Plane, Kills w/Plane, total Air Defense awards, total Efficiency Plane awards, and Air superiority awards.

It makes sense - if you help your team you get awarded for it.
Just going for kills = no teamwork which reflects on the board..

that would explain why my ingame score is like 20,000 odd when my website score is like 130,000

If you play properly (for the team) in a plane, i.e. establish and maintain air superiority, you can score fuck all depending on how many opposition noobs keep trying to take off. So it makes sense for the stats to track this way.
