so basically if you dont have an internet connection your fucked, if you dont want to buy the games new your fucked
some people say the console market is in decline. cutting second hand games out of the equation could make it worse
i really dont like where we are headed.
new xbox will require internet connection

Nope not a good idea at all.
I know some people don't agree with the second hand market, BUT it does fuel purchases of new games. I've traded in plenty of games to buy new ones.
This will hurt EVERYONE, especially retailers, as Sy has said a few times, once retail is gone everything will be digital. Once that happens you will pay £50-£60 for games and I can see CoD going for the RRP of £65
And what about the EU ruling about being able to re-sell media?

Microsoft’s next console will require an Internet connection in order to function, ruling out a second-hand game market for the platform. A new iteration of Xbox Live will be an integral part of Microsoft’s next console, while improved Kinect hardware will also ship alongside the unit.
And what about the EU ruling about being able to re-sell media?

If Sony actively don't prevent second hand games (and after all, how does it affect them as manufacturers?*) they could gain a massive foothold in the next generation.
*As manufacturers. I appreciate they are also both publishers, but I feel they would win bigger from allowing 2nd hand games than they would lose from it.
This is all incidental to the damage 2nd hand sales do to the games industry. Daz, those trade-ins are all lost sales to publishers. Losing X sales to gain 1 is bad business sense no matter which way you cut it.

but if there's no trade in, they lose a console sale and a potential game sale from me. Sure it's not all black and white, but it's not all bad either.InfiniteStates wrote: This is all incidental to the damage 2nd hand sales do to the games industry. I and people like me will buy new games from time to time, but if all that's left is piracy on the PC, who loses then?

i rarely buy second hand myself, i rarely buy at all so when i do its normally new anyway and often ive asked for it as a gift anyway. but i still understand the value for second hand.
it seems like a dark path to travel to me. something does not bode well.

Well i think it's probably the start of the digital age now anyway.
More and more retail giants are in trouble every other month, basic games coming out and offering somesort of digital premium service or exclusive downloads...
Not just games, online stores for clothes, music and so on.. food even.
I think if they make the next gen 2nd hand free and require internet connections, it will work but not in the massive numbers they think it will, people just won't buy it, i really don't think people will be so stupid to..
There is still a hardcore generation alive today that want physical copies of games, new or 2nd hand in a box on a shelf.. but it's a dying breed.
I myself have hardly bought any boxed games recently, it's normally through steam/origin, digitally.. i don't like the rules some of those purchases give me, but if it's going to be like steam usually less than a retail boxed game, i'll buy it.
More at topic though, online only, i doubt it will work and just like 3d tv, will be an option instead of a must.
For me, i certianly would not support online only purchases, i also pre ordered sim city 5 on pc, which has to be played online only, i cancelled this pre order and hope they change their mind.
I think call of duty will be one of the first to do this, it's the biggest fanbase of all time and not to be pig ignorant, but the game is shit in my eyes, but ppl will buy that shit if it's online use only or not.

With all due respect Daz, I don't think the unemployed who scrape new purchases with trade-ins are their target demographic. They are interested in disposable income - people like me and my mate at work who are stupid enough to buy games new then leave them on the shelf unplayed, while they buy more games. Another rumour, the next box will also not work without kinect (included) and the always on internet rumour IS CONFIRMED by SuperDaE the guy that tried to sell a Durango dev kit on ebay.

you don't have to control the xbox with kinect, but if you do you'll find it works pretty well, and the new kinect is supposed to be even better.YorkshirePud wrote:well thats put me right off getting any xbox products in the future, kinetic required, pah im not waving my arms around to control a game, sorry but thats not for me.

I'm very narrow minded when it comes to game control ill admit it unashamedly im happy in a nice comfy chair with a controller. of course if we dont innovate we stagnate i realise that but i think its dawning on me what with the way the video game industry is going im going to get left behind, probably because of the way its being conducted as a business and also through my own choice.
