right first the bare facts
the memory card reader is a factory installed one in a HP Pavillion a1128.uk model well over 5 years old now but still chugging away, its a direct connection to a mobo usb.
the memory card in question is a brand new 8GB SDHC Class 4.
when i insert it into the HP it will not read it. in fact any attempt to force it to read it manually makes my windows xp throw a tantrum, i get an I/O error. however when its been slotted into the memory card reader of my parents brand new laptop it works fine!
additionally the memory card reader on the HP will still read MMC cards fine.
I have heard that some older memory card readers cannot cope with card sizes above 2GB does this seem the logical outcome here? sadly i have no other memory card readers to test on this PC.
this is not a game breaker situation if it cant be fixed but it will be an annoyance.

2GB and 4GB are problematic for older readers, I have a spare and if it works you can have it. I'll test it later.
Might also be the HC high capacity thats throwing it off.

im pretty sure your right too, its an old pc by modern standards now, bit of a sham. thanks for the offer of the card reader though daz but dont worry about it, ill just connect the camera by usb that will read fine
might be a good reason to look into getting a new tower pc possibly.
