I know the bigger HDD wont phsyically fit inside, but thats not to say it wont work outside the box.
I've found a cable on ebay for a fiver and this old PS3 fat still has the original 40gig HDD. But I have two spare hard drives, one 300gig and a 150 gig. Both 7200RPM 8mb cache
So it'd be nice to use one and get the extra benefit of a faster drive too.
I'll let you know how it goes, I think installing the cable inside the PS3 might be hard work.
The real question is would RAID 0 work with 2 identical drives?
Ps3 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch

Be careful with going over speed too - it won't support a too high an access speed either.

I still cant put my PS3 back together, because the cable I bought is an extension cable and a single moulded (molded???) power/data block.
I now need a separate power and data cable.
I'll attach the data cable to the drive via the PS3 and the power via the butchered external caddy.
I'll get some pics up eventually.

7200rpm should be fine, the other PS3 had a 7200 drive and that was fast as f%^kInfiniteStates wrote:Be careful with going over speed too - it won't support a too high an access speed either.

I finally managed it, the drive is working fine externally.
The data cable obviously comes from the PS3 and the power from my PC.
It's quite fast too, install times are vastly reduced, partly because the drive is blank and there's no fragmentation and partly due to it being a 7200RPM 8MB cache drive.
Practicality: I've haven't done the work to be practical. I also had to remove several peices of the chassis just to install the data cable. So it's not tidy either.
So why did I do it?
I'm skint at the 'mo and needed a much bigger HDD in my old PS3, the 40 gig just isn't enough at all these days. 5 years ago it was fine, installs were small and PSN games weren't much bigger, and I only had a few of them. In time I'll buy a bigger 2.5inch hdd and do a permanent install.
Now I have a shit load of PSN games and DLC, most games now are also around 1GB, so you actually need 2GB of space, 1 gig for the download and 1 gig for the final uncompressed install.
Take another game thats 3+GB and you realise you need more space than you bargained for.

I know you have it wired from the PC,
But what you do need is one of these
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-4-Pin-IDE ... 993wt_1270
Used to use it for the IDE Drives all the time.
