Who's tempted?
Who's getting one?
Who's letting it slide?

I think I'll let it slide to be honest.
I'm so used to having my iPad 2 now I dont think I need another gaming system.

Free games, 69pence games, even the most expensive game/app I've purchased was £13.99 and you know the cheapest game for the vita via PSN is going to be at least £7.99 not including mini's, which might play ok, but they dont exactly make the PSP work for a living.

Sure the Vita might be much more powerful than an iPad, but there are some games out there that make you go WOW! How the hell is that even possible.

So no thanks, I'll stick with my casual gaming on the iPad.

So what about the rest of you?

Yeah I might if the price drops below £200 for 3G. Until then... iPad ftw.

I really hate that, $250 or £250

250.00 USD = 19,278.75 JPY
250.00 GBP = 29,927.37 JPY
250.00 GBP = 388.088 USD
250.00 USD = 161.046 GBP

It just goes to show that more money is made per unit in the UK.

This is why it's wrong (for me anyway)

Then I read this:
During its first week on sale in Japan, PS Vita sold 320 K units. The sales period tracked was just two days, so hopeful fans thought that perhaps the first full week would bring good news.

But the second week brought devastation – just 72 K units sold. When Nintendo launched its latest handheld, the sales of the 3DS declined from 370 K to 210K over the first two weeks. That drop-off led to a steep further sales erosion, which forced Nintendo to implement an unusually early and steep price cut. This cut combined with the launches of big franchises like Monster Hunter, Super Mario Land and Mario Kart turned the fortunes of the 3DS around in Japan. The 3DS has now sold more than 4 Million units in Japan and in the past week it crushed Sony‘s more advanced PS Vita by 484 K vs. 72 K in unit sales.

Sony will likely be forced to cut the price of the PS Vita from 24’000 yen to well below 20’000 yen very soon. The upcoming US launch could be a true debacle for several reasons. Sony has decided to price Vita at $250, higher than the Amazon Kindle Fire. The hottest games like the latest Uncharted are priced at $50, while many other major titles are $40. The pricing seems delusional in light of the Japanese response to the PS Vita. The older PSP handheld console has been a bigger hit in Japan than it has been in the US market. The tablet and iPhone market penetration rates in America are higher than in Japan – consumers may well be more reluctant to splurge on expensive, proprietary handheld consoles. The launch of the Kindle Fire at $200 has changed the US consumer electronics pricing environment.

I nodded in agreement until I read about the Kindle, then I thought *WTF* does this guy know what he's talking about?
Comparing a state of the art portable gaming console to a glorified ebook reader is like comparing a Ford Fiesta to a bicycle.

Japan is hot for handhelds, where as the rest of the world is 'meh'. Trying to extend the Japanese reception universally is a recipe for disaster.

To answer the £250 = $250 thing, it boils down to one thing and one thing only... market size. The US is huge compared to any other single market, so things are often cheaper. It's the same principle as buying in bulk (e.g. I can buy one Snickers for 60p or a box of Snickers for 20p per bar).

I think the Vita will do slightly worse than the PSP given the target audience is hardcore gamers only. The prices are too steep for the casual gamer. Plus, there's a global recession.

I may get one when the price comes down, but only if Monster Hunter Portable 3 is on it.

but you define your market size by price, if the price is too high you lock out a massive number of people, maybe hundreds of thousands of people.

Look at the 3DS, nintendo HAD to drop the price due to poor sales, and the sales numbers sky rocketed.

Marketing is making people WANT the item, people want it but can't afford it at those prices. Market share should have NOTHING to do with a system that is identical (or as close as can be) across Western territories.

Someone at TSA has replied that my argument above is tosh.
Our price includes VAT @20% + 8% Manufactured outside the EU TAX.

So I need someone who knows about adding and subtracting VAT to verify my numbers before I reply.

Example: WiFi base model
249.99 CAD = 158.005 GBP With 5% VAT = 262.48 CAD = 165.932 GBP

UK WiFi version retails @ £229.00 @£229 - 20% VAT = £183
BUT they say there's an extra 8% VAT so minus 8% and that comes to £ £168.54

So in theory its slightly more here minus VAT than it is over there.
BUT I've been told simple adding and subtracting of VAT isn't that simple. Am I wrong?

Either way, we get shafted royaly (literally by the royals and their duty).

Percentages are very susceptible to the base amount, so if you take one off then the other you will get a different result than if you add them together and take them off at the same time.

Unfortunately I don't know which way around it is done. It could be that the 8% comes off the base + VAT, or that VAT comes off base + 8%, or that the cost is (VAT + 8)% + base.

I've heard that Japan has already had a price drop.
Maybe it's worth waitig a couple of months AFTER launch to see what happens... probably nothing.

Jay, how much is the Canadian 3G with the extras?

The ps vita 3g/wifi is $299.00 and i dunno what extras you want obviously you could buy all those at home but they dont have the pricing up on the mem cards yet. and games are ranging from
30 - 50 bucks only one that is 50 is uncharted.
and stores in japan are dropping prices sony has not offically dropped the price and will probably not plan to any time soon i would belive....

BUT if you buy the digital versions of the games they are almost 10 dollars cheaper i belive then the physical card versions of the games so i think i might spring for a 16 or 32 gig card to save a bit of money on games.

Picked up my vita today the case that came with it is pretty awesome and heavy duty little deviants its hella fun ass game.
also picked up a 32 gig card cause well go big or go home
wipeout 2048 ( which looks better then wipeout HD )
hotshots gold ( not played yet )
modnation racers ( not played yet )
uncharted golden abyss ( not played yet )
and also downloaded the new super stardust which looks really good.

over all i will honestly say i am not mad about the money i have spent i feel it was well worth it it looks good works great and is fast and responsive. I was a little worried after all the bad comments but thats just because it doesnt have all the functionality of a cell phone which i am glad about its a gaming console not a fucking ripoff apple product cause if this was apple it would have cost 6000 bucks knowing there price points.

android forever fuck apple
lol

I think it has an inbuilt screenshot feature, like the iPhone. You hold something then select... it was mentioned on the EU forum. I'll see if I can find it - if I can dodge all the shit Domaniitrix is attempting to fling =))

EDIT: It's the PS button and Start button at the same time...

Well in all reality if you have been keeping up with the vita and have watched the youtube vids and shit then really you know what its about. Me posting a screen shot is not gonna do the system justice and the way it looks on the oled screen. Looks better then my hd htc screen and the touch screens are extremlly responsive sometimes to responsive.

Games are awesome well the only 2 i have played out of all the ones i have grabbed which is wipeout and uncharted. the cross play feature is really cool but your just basically playing wipeout hd with ps3 players which sucks because the 2048 tracks are better and the game looks alot better then the hd ps3 version.

The battery playing uncharted on full lasted 5:15 so 5 hours is pretty good for a game that is somewhat pushing the console.
overall i like the machine it does one thing and does it well and thats console gaming in your hand.
