Is the new mars rover programme a waste of $2.5bn or is it money well spent?

Waste of money - the money would be better spent developing an orbital lift on the equator so materials and stuff can be got into space for a fraction of the cost in future.

Then we can start building monstrous ships in orbit. And we can start using the sun as a rubbish tip instead of burying it in our own "backyard".

Depends, the fact it well overshot its budget, an the fact it well an truly over shot it's deadline!!

From what I recall it's double the expected cost an double the expected time!

In theory it's well spent, in comparison to what we already have there, it's much bigger, millions or sensors,
We should get some better intel from this unit,

An more important this is the last unmanned mission to mars,

Next mission will me manned, so if anything I would look at this as a new method of landing and there testing it in every way possible!

Manned mission to mars has no ETA but am happy to put £100 down that the next one is manned! And this unit will be the decider if everything is successful,
