Ok Dave this is where I need you.

I need to do:

1. setup a name server
2. web server with all the mod cons and tight ass security
3. remote desktop
4. strip everything else out.

I just read Nameservers......

Are you actually going to link an External Domain name to your Laptop / Server...

20MB Connection only gives a user of 2.0 Mbps download stream.
Thats if your lucky enough to get that amount.
Most ISP will cap at 1.7 Mbps

This is easily exhausted with just a few visits from a few different people.

What are you links and the aim goal?
Are you hosting sites? or Sigs? or pics? or steaming music?

The "now playing" forum sig, and thats it.

Subsonic is staying on my main PC.

And thats it.

If you hosting Multiple Domains.
Your going to need a manager,

Something like, WHM/cPanel, Plesk,

But these out out the Option for you, Plesk you can get a single license for free, But this allows use for a SINGLE domain.
Anything more it costs, and Cpanel costs, without any deals or commercial licenses, Its going to be a Hefty bill!!

I have never used none of the free ones, Maybe this is something for you to research on.
But some i do here around the community are:
http://www.vhcs.net/
http://www.webmin.com/

They might be worth having a little look at...
Again i have not used them, but would be happy to download and install on mine to go through with you if you get stuck,

But normally all the instructions are pretty simple.

some program come pre loaded with PHP and SQL and Apache etc.

If not they are easy enough to install, you can Prob do a search through the software control panel, and install them if you have the desktop interface.
If not and your using the Server (Console version only)
Then google the commands, there one liners.
things link

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install apache2

I think a control panel is going to be easiest for you to manage, Maybe once you are familiar with the running of a control panel and the requirements, and navigating and using linux, you prob could ditch it over time and setup your system to run the bare features and services to handle such requirements.

I've managed to install MySQL and thanks to the command line, Apache 2.

No idea what the file locations are or config files.

So what do I need to do to setup a domain name server?

You aint really read what i posted did you :p

You need to look at a control panel Daz, Doing it without one for you, is learning how to run before you can walk.

You need to read up on them two links i provided and see what the requirements are.

Or LAMP...... I dont know if that would for External hosting or its local hosting only.

But without a Control Panel your going to be punching in the dark to sort out your nameservers and DNS functions.

Unless you find a Tut from start to finish setting one up.
But this would only make managing it harder for you in the long run as everything will be done VIA Terminal

Wamp server can be used to run an external website, but it's securing it.
Is assume LAMP will be the same.

I'll take a look at one of the cpanel type things.
