for the 3rd time this week my Ps3 has refused to switch off.
It's crashed and wont turn off by the power button.

Last night I'd finished copying some files from the Ps3, then hit the power button to turn it off, and all it did was sit there with the power light flashing.

It's done it while watching a film, playing infamous 2 and last night.

I think it's definately a hardware fault. Time to backup my saved games, format and get a replacement.

Hold the standby button until it does go off. You may have to hold it a while, but it will definitely go off eventually.

I finally retired my launch 60gb machine on Thursday. I think it had bad HDD sectors, and there was something wrong with the GPU...

Certain games would crash in certain places until I uninstalled them. Batman was especially bad as it doesn't do a full install - it installs bits on the fly. And all games had the potential to develop infinite length vertices, so now and then a 3D object would have a line that extended for infinity.

I now have a 320gb slim (which sounds like an old 3.5" floppy when it reads the disk). I did the ethernet system transfer, but it wouldn't work until I used the recovery menu to restore the file system on the fat. And I had huge trouble resyncing my trophies, even after I remembered I needed to remove the old PS3 from the DMZ and add the new one instead.

I also had to get Motorstorm: Apocalypse (it was that or bloody FIFA). It really is a step down for the Motorstorm franchise...

Yeah I tried holding the power button, but even that didn't work.
All I could do was unplug it from the back.

Shame about the launch PS3, considering the amount of stick it's had it's done extremely well.

Maybe all it needs is a new HDD?

Not if the GPU has issues. Although all it may have needed was the file systems repairing... But having only 60gb was a pain in the arse, so it was worth doing, and now I have a spare PS3 :)

If it was an occasional thing then it's possibly the HDD, but if it was a continuous thing then it was most likely the GPU.

Still it's nice to have a spare! Mines in my wardrobe, no Blu-Ray drive, but PSN only is still good too.

It was open to abuse... people paid £5.00 got their ps3 replaced then cancelled their subs.

still it's Sony's own fault for not making a minimum of a 12months subscription.

yeah and ppl paying £5 registering a borked ps3 and getting a new one the day after.
I'm lucky really, i umm'ed n ar'ed for ages over it.

I've had 4 ps3's out of it, for £60 per year... if your ps3 breaks down sony want replacement £135 or £225 for a new one.

So yeah it's been a good investment.

I'm gutted - I kept one of the fliers for it lying around for ages, but when I got around to it, it had been cancelled. Especially gutted as it covers PSP too...

But! you only get a Referbed unit.

So £60 for the first 3 years (If it never broke in that time)

£180

Then the Slim comes out and you get that: £220
And no more issues.

Work out the figures and if it was worth while or not.
If you get where am coming from on the post.

Its worth while with Convenience, as you have nothing to shell out for, and as you say its there next day, But do the figures work out,
if it never died since the launch of the PS3 to the Slim,
Then you buy out a New slim and never have a issue.
How much would save!!

That is unless you console died within 12 months after buying it or a two or three years

Yeah but that's a huge risk dave and wouldn't make sense.
All of you here have had to shell out for new ps3's.

It's like saying, i won't insure my car because nothing will happen to me... then you get hit by a lorry.
You just do not know..what's round the corner.

Slims break down too, u read the 178 page thread on the eu forums lol?

Anyways... the point is you can even change on the insurance for a noisy fan... so yeah lol.
Of course it's a good deal, insurance is always a good thing.

Cheers Dave...makes me feel better about being too slack to sign up :)

It was worth it for Sy who seems to have less luck than me, but for me, crunching the numbers:

March, 2007 to June, 2011 = 51 months @ £5pcm = £255.
320gb slim with Motorstorm Apocalypse = £269.

And I still have the old one as a spare.

Yer see it paid off well for some people like States
And would of worked for me too, as mine lasted its long life.

But there are the unlucky ones like you Sys!!

You make a fair point about the EU forum and the Slims.
TBH since the split i dont think i have visited that forum :p
But am shocked that after 4 years from the Launch of there first unit, to the Slim, Better units with Issues ironed out,
people are still faced with Dieing consoles.

Understand that its expected in this day of age and techo, and things to go tits up,
But that many consoles!!!! :( thats bad designing from any point
