They do hold a Fair and Valid point:
During the last few days, Anonymous has been targeting Sony for their outrageous treatment of not only PS3 users and jailbreakers, but also of the general public. Their propaganda regarding jailbreaking implies that it encourages piracy and thereby makes people lose their jobs, whereas jailbreaking actually just means you are making YOUR device do what it should do. Imagine if Microsoft forced you to use Internet Explorer instead of Firefox or Chrome. Imagine if they denied users from using any other web browser than their own. Many people would obviously be pissed... but then, why aren't you pissed at Sony?

They kind of ignore the fact that it is Microsoft giving anyone the choice of what browser you can use in the first place? Surely the monopolisation of all PC hardware is a much more worthy cause to be fighting. At least Sony is only controlling it's own hardware.
To me that's like having a go at some chav for spitting, while a girl is raped across the road.

i just think that the argument of hacking the PS3 is more than black and white and more a billion shades of grey, the general public the vast majority of people will never ever do it to their PS3s and few people will buy pirated games, i'd never get them because i like getting a physical game or at least putting a bit towards the poor bastard who worked silly hours getting it working.
the long term impact of piracy probably is very minor, the trouble is that ill bet more malicious people have liked the fact the PS3 has been cracked wide open than the homebrewers
i wish they'd go pick on microsoft again

Piracy isn't really the problem - it's always been there whatever the medium (i.e. music, film, TV, games) and the industry has kind of budgeted for it. Hell - the games industry are the biggest bunch of pirates going, but mainly so they can research games similar to what they are making without incurring expenses.
The problem is information integrity: leaderboards, online glitching/cheating, trophy hacks... How long before some cunt realises he can hack into every PSN users credit card details?
Or you know how unstable Battlefield can be at time anyway? You really want to add "you have been kicked by PunkBuster" on top of that?
Or what happens when they are bored with writing trippy media players or whatever other homebrew they so desparately need to write that can't be done on a PC, then decide to write PS3 flavoured viruses? That nuke your save files? Or again, steal card or login details? PS3s must be easy targets if they're in a DMZ...?

I'm just wondering if everyone who kind of supported Geohot and his self-righteous homebrew crusade still feels the same?
Because you can be your compromised credit card that he's the cunt that opened the flood gate that's fucking over PSN right now. Intentional or not.

i suppose different views
I still agree to some level what Geohot done...
If sony never went down the way of taking everyone to court would hackers have gone this far?
Maybe..... Maybe not....... Maybe it was something that was uncovered from Anonymous attack and that was only in retaliation of the legal action Sony took.
Maybe this may of happened anyway without a Hacked console.
Too many maybes. But i agree to disagree!!
I would hate android and my iphone if it was not jailbroken, i have so many more features that i like and now use day to day that i would of not had by default.
blaaaa its 50/50 honestly

I think that Sony upset the hacking community by being heavy handed, and thats why there is all this trouble now. By heavy handed I mean by taking the precendent of suing the hackers.
Microsoft didn't, they went down the ban hammer road, and probably sold more consoles because of it.

Sony are certainly relating this hack to the recent attacks, inspite of the possibility of an unrelated inside job from redundant SOE employee(s).

Nice find Infinite, good read too.
I've cut some paragraphs out that I think need some consideration:

they've already said it a known vulnerability that allowed the hackers access to the entire system, was that vulnerability the root kit? I know we keep joking about it, but think about it, it offers root access, is damn near impossible to detect, and even harder to clean off when you do find it.
Sony sacked over 200 staff members days before the hack occured, so is it possible that someone installed the rootkit before they were ejected from the premises?

Now this I find annoying, Sony are saying it's not their fault, it's the fault of the law makers not making laws so tough that hackers wont dare hack.
yeah right, there's nothing worse than the death sentence, yet plenty of murders still occur.
No Sony, the way to prevent hackers from infiltrating your system and preventing massive amounts of data theft is...
1 Hire the best staff you can, look after them, pay them well.
2 make sure your security software is up to date, and get an outside company to do penetration testing every few months.
3 Encrypt the fucking data. Sure it might slow the system down a bit, so spread the load onto more servers.

Sony was affraid to release inaccurate information?
But thats exactly what you did, first it was maintenence, then it was a hack, then it was a japanese server crash, then it was something else... and you wonder why we're pissed off with a lack of information or a lack of correct information?
Finally.

Added automated software monitoring? Tiny personal firewall per-chance?
