Well it finally arrived - Delivery day.
I was up at 6:30am expecting a phone call from argos telling me what time it'll arrive.
Chris and I had spent an hour yesterday demolishing a portion of my desk, rebuilding and re-strengthening it. I needed it too.
Fucking hell this TV is heavy. But then again it is a 50" plasma, and plasma's are heavy anyway.
My previous TV was a 42" LG and it was nice too, nice and BIG!
This thing is like a monolith from 2001, it's enormous. Turn it on it's side (portrait) and it'd look like one too. It's very black and sleek.
So anyway, I suppose you dont care about all that, you want to know how it performs in 3D? How the hell would I know, the glasses keep getting stolen from me. I mean, I only bought the damn thing right?
So what's it like when I do get some glasses?
First game:
Flight control HD
I guess you all know the game, so there's no need to tell you about it, I just need to let you know about the 3D effect.
It's nothing short of jaw dropping.
There are multiple layers of 3D'ness, different aircraft fly at different altitudes, and thats a feature that is replicated with this game. But not just with the game, the menu's also have different depths too.
I liked this game before 3D, now I can see I'll love it more.
Wipeout HD
I guess this is the review you'll most likely want to hear about.
Well, I was dissappointed, the 3D effect isn't that major, it's there, it works, and it looks good, but it's not amazing. It is nice, just not all up in your face like you just clocked a bouncers mate on a Saturday night.
I tried to take a screenshot too, but it still renders it in 2D (I think), I'll have to experiment a little more.
Black Ops
Main Menu - It looks nice, there's a good depth to it (shame about the game though) and a nice look.
Overall the effect is done quite well, but zooming down the scope is harder as it blurs the iron sights slightly. So it will make the game harder to play, I assume you'll get used to this over time.
So far overall I'm impressed, and so I should be, I've only had the TV for an hour or just over. The depth is impressive but there are some problems, and they could be deal breakers.
1. Ghosting is definately there, in games and movies. It's like the LCD blurring/ghosting on fast moving images, only in 3D they are there when the image is static too, not always and not always noticeable. But definately there.
2. fast moving scenes create some tearing, its not a smooth 30fps or 60fps, it's like it's slightly slower and it's noticable.
I've really got to admit that had I seen these issues in the store I probably will have still bought a 3D Tv, but thats me. I'm also new to plasma TV's, so I cant really say if these problems are there in these TV's in general, I've only ever had LCD screens.
But there is another and very very significant positive.
This TV does pseudo 3D or 2D to 3D conversion, and it does it so fast that there is little or no input/controller lag.
I tried BFBC2 and I only played for a few minutes, but I was laughing out loud so many times. The barrel of a tank when it swings around is just unbelievable, it's something you have to see and experience.
Dynamic Themes look fantastic.
XMB is amazing
Music Visuals were made for this.
It'll take time to get used to the negatives, and I think somepeople probably never will, but it's early days yet, in a year or two I'm sure all these problems will have vanished and we'll be left with crystal clear 3D.
My brand new 3D TV and PS3 Gaming

Ghosting is always an Issue with this day and age on TV's
On the Tubed TV's it was different.
I cannot remember the indepth detail, but i was speaking to quite a clever TV geek in Lewis one day.
About the TV's, The difference in Price, Performance and clarity.
And he was explaining about Ghosting on the TV's (Quite Intresting)
He had all the TV's on Display, and he got 2 TV's side by side, and played a DVD (Stress Test)
You could see the difference, it was amazing!!
One TV would Stutter a little moving on the Cliff to the water level with all the Indepth Detail.
And the other Done the same, Just not as much.
Then it went onto over Scenes, and Dark Background, White text etc. A deliberate test for Ghosting.
And i was Pretty Shocked, For what you pay, and what is advertised, this is still a common issue in todays Technology.
He then showed me the Same DVD on a Tubes TV......
No Stutter, No Ghost nothing........
Understandably the Picture is no where near as good as HD and LCD
But i found it interesting how we move Forward in Technology but also move back.
I did have a little test on the 3D tv, but it didnt make me WOW for the price they pay.
But again, am sure it would be different if you watching a Movie in your own home, And let your eyes adjust a little and get used to it.
and better in other scenes etc etc.

I've just got back from taking the box to the tip, and on the way there I was T-Boned by a white van man at junction... he was pulling out from a side road, was flashed by another driver (on-coming traffic from my perspective) and started pulling out while I was passing him.

The silver Subaru is the car that flashed the WVM. But amazingly he ran over to WVM and said "I'll be a witness for you!". Fucking tool actually helped cause the accident.

Motorstorm Pacific Rift/3D Rift
Pacific Rift is NOT in 3D, and 3D rift is £9.99 so in my eye's it's a bit of a rip off, especially when all the other 3D games are patched for free.
Still I did splash the cash, and yes it's impressive, the debris from the tyres (water, mud, sand, soil) all look really nice flying at your face, and the aspect is incredible, but the joy of 3D is tainted with having to spend a tenner when the update should have been free.
Super StarDust HD:
FUCK ME. Now this is what it's all about. The second you see the menu, you see the starfield heading directly for you eyeballs (which are on stalks) you'll agree that this IS what 3D gaming is all about.
Playing the game is pretty good, and those rocks have never looked so big and daunting, the grid gives a great perspective, the ship flys somewhere in the middle ground. But forget all that, it's the ship crashing and exploding that tears your eyeballs apart and even makes your head fly backwards.
Definately by far the most impressive game yet, and Battlefield Bad Company 2 looked amazing even in pseudo 3D.
Movie: Piranha 3D
I like the movie, I liked the nudity, and I really wanted to see this in all it's 3D glory (hole). But the parallax is too strong, ie, the 3D effect is far to much, they seem to have set the camera's too far apart, while some scenes work, others just make you feel like you've gone cross-eyed.
Overall it's horrible, but if you watch it in 2D then switch to pseudo 3D it works very well.
Movie: Avatar 3D
James Cameron is a pro 3D film maker, this is something like his 3rd major 3D release and you can tell he cut his teeth previously.
It looks incredible. Wether you like the film or not, it's worth a look in 3D for sure. One slight problem though, it could be the BD-rip I have (the 3D version isn't out yet unless you have a Panasonic TV, then it's free), or it could be the tint in the glasses, but some scenes look very good, but obviously fake. It's hard to describe, but the fakery is there (obviously as pandora and the machines dont exist) and it shows.
Still the movie is impressive and it'll be worth a full viewing soon.

It's brilliant Dave, no headache or nausea, but I knew I was ok with 3D already. Sy might not be so lucky though as the lenses do flash on and off. It's not perceptable but its there.theENIGMATRON wrote:Sounds good!!

Movie:
Piranha 3D - Revisted
So I fancied a bit of a piranha last night and I wanted to try and get used to the deep 3D effect. I was in bed, switch everything on, booted the movie and it looked fine. In fact it looked really good.
No ghosting, great 3D, and a crystal clear image.
I guess being an extra 10 feet away made all the difference.
Now watching avatar from start to finish, then later Monsters vs Aliens.
Or maybe a little Super StarDust HD 3D inbetween.
