Publisher Activision may consider shutting down Call of Duty: Black Ops servers on the PlayStation Network due to the rampant hacking and cheating that has made online multiplayer a miserable experience for many PS3 owners.

Complaints about losing saved ranks, unlocks and statistics are common, in addition to reports of cheaters abusing the PlayStation Network. Black Ops player Jason Koblovsky recently took it upon himself to chronicle his experiences with the shooter’s multiplayer on his blog.

Koblosky then went on to post a response he received from Dov Carson, Senior Tester/Senior Support Representative for Activision. In his response, Carson makes mention of an extreme solution to the problems players are experiencing with Black Ops’ online multiplayer, saying that “The publishers have the right to shut down the servers for their game at any time as well, which based on the number of reported posts from users may be a viable solution over the free PSN.”

Carson suggests exchanging a sealed copy of the game to swap to another platform or exchanging the title for another Activision title as options. In a previous response to player complaints, he also suggested to sticking to groups with friends to avoid having your multiplayer experience ruined by hackers.

Carson also reminds us that the “online experience may change at any time.” He certainly has a point there. But if the state of Call of Duty: Black Ops on the PS3 is as bad as people are saying, we don’t know if it’s necessarily a fair point.

Tell us what your experience has been so far with Call of Duty: Black Ops. Have you lost your stats and ranks? Is it really that bad?

Do any of us care? LOL
I hope whatever course of action they take, it costs Activision lots of money. But not just out of spite :)

It's probably Activisions way of forcing Sony to introduce the ban hammer.

Or if Activision really are that mean, then I pity them. It will draw the attention of a lot of hackers, black and white hats will work together to punish them.

BUT if Microsoft really are behind this, then it breaks God knows how many laws, and Microsoft will also burn for it.

I think that in all honesty, and despite how much I dislike Activision, it's just Sabre rattling.

If customers can return games that are buggy and unpatched, should publishers be able to take people to court for using or making aimbots?

The very bad side effects of the recent PS3 hacks are pretty obvious, but one side effect are hacks that allow aimbots, glitching, lost stats and ranks, and God mode.

Some positives will come from hacking, but they will be massively out weighted by the negatives, and this type of hacking could destroy consoles.

Virtually all online games can be affected and probably will be eventually. It's now down to Sony to prevent hackers from doing this by banning everyone with custom firmware.

What you do offline in the privacy of your own room is upto you.
But online... should developers/publishers be able to take these people to court to reclaim lost revenue?

Aimbots hackers are one reason why I gave up on PC gaming, but because the PS3 was secure, there was almost none of it on this machine.

Sure Call of duty had some flaws (3 games in a row with the same flaw??? WTF is up with that), but as far as I've ever heard, they were the ONLY games to get the aimbots.

Honestly I don't know what I'd do if these hacks became the norm on the PS3.

Maybe it's time that devs opened the PS3 to rented servers, at least that way someone would be able to control the deadheaded players.
