Another +1 on the SDK

A closed system in this day and age is not a good business model, and makes people want to hack, hence Geohot and fail0verflow.

GeoHot talks to G4, it's only a few minutes long, but he looks and sounds confident.

yawn.
Because downloading games and ripping off soundtracks and game images is homebrew ... okay.

They can't hide behind this homebrew lark, i'm sorry its just retarded.

If i told a judge i'm going to grab a copy of the latest film from pirate bay and let my street watch it, he'd say it was fine too.

Geohot is deffo a hobo though, lol.
For 4 years geohot did fuck all in homebrew for linux.
Homebrew intentions or not, damn, who he tryna kid?

More to the point why do people defend this guy, in the end piracy of games will spoil it for us and then ya'll complain games are to dear and u don't like digital downloads..because this is what will happen in the long run - FACT!

I aint defending the guy.

But would you ask the guy who painted your house to fix your car?
who says he has anything to do with the development of homebrew.
Thats down to everyone els.

Jailbreak on the iphone for an example.
He exploited it to install a Unsigned Application

One was made called Cydia,
This allowed a number of Homebrew and Tweaks made to the handset that is not official allowed.
None of what where ever developed by GeoHot?

Geohot made it possible
Everyone els done all the work.

Just making a point thats all :D Not starting no arguments.

A small update:
Sony has failed to get a temporary restraining order on George Hotz.
This mean Geohot gets to keep his toys at home, and all the data on his website.

I think there's a good chance that they'll also loose the fight to get him in a Calfornia court too.

Score:
1 - 0 to Geohot

It's kind of sickening the way he's been made into a victim and minor celebrity. If someone had paid him to do it, I'm pretty sure Sony could file industrial espionage charges.

ROFL

I found this rather funny
Mr. Heidari stated, “While most companies issue firmware upgrades to increase a product’s abilities over its life cycle, Sony has taken the unacceptable and draconian approach of decreasing the PS3′s capabilities by actually destroying a core feature of the PS3. Imagine taking in your car for an oil change and having the manufacturer remove your car’s air conditioner, radio, and half its horsepower because of fears that other hypothetical individuals might abuse their vehicles. It just doesn’t make any sense, and it’s a slap in the face to the consumers that put their support behind the product.” Mr. Kellar proclaimed, “This case rests on Sony’s misguided belief that it has the unfettered ability to control how consumers use the products they legitimately purchase.”
Regardless how it is covered up, or spoke of, you have to admit that is funny

Not really. A) his base premise is wrong and B) his analogy is biased and off.

OtherOS was hardly a "core feature". Games, BluRays and media centre are the core features. Not even the internet browser is a core feature.

A better car analogy is probably that the garage took your tow bar off because they are tired of fixing your bent chassis on warranty.

Are the people that are pro-Geohot/fail0verflow also people that condone rape because she wears provocative clothes and obviously asked for it? Or condone burglary because they left their front door open?

The argument that it's their hardware, they can do what they want with it applies to smashing it up with a hammer, or turning it into a paperweight or something. It does not entitle them to reverse engineer or crack the security then broadcast it to the world. The firmware and by extension the security are used under license from Sony, not owned by the PS3 owner. Hence the terms and conditions under which use of the license is granted. And I'm pretty sure they breached the T&Cs.

And on a side note, just because it was declared legal for people to jailbreak their phones means nothing. This is from the country that allowed a law suit by someone who burned their tongue on a HOT apple pie LMAO.

What if Sony removed OtherOS but gave us firefox and Flash 10.
Sure people would have grumbled about loosing linux, but the fact that we were given something else in return would have been ok.

It may not have been a feature to many people, but it was sold as an important feature. But if people had a problem at the time, they could have had a refund or compensation.

I'm not for piracy, although no doubt I'll have a couple games on there that I wont pay for (Black Ops - just so I can play botmatches with Chris), I'll admit as much, BUT what I am in favour of is being able to use my PS3 with extra features, Homebrew and FTP, media player, web browser, and what ever else may come along.

There is definately no easy solution for Sony now, I just hope to a point they can win, but I also want the hackers to win.

It's my PS3 and I'll do what I want with it.

12 months ago I just accepted the fact that the PS3 was great but limited, now it's hacked, I dont have to accept that fact anymore.

I didn't find it funny, I just thought of it as one persons opinion.

What if Sony released a legitimate SDK? Would that give the homebrewers a channel to release their wares?

It might also help development of the PS3/PS4, it could give some creative idea's that Sony thought irrelevant or not worthy.

Would it also be possible for Sony to develop a new usb dongle that installed a new firmware, but also had some new security on it that would allow people like me (who switch between legit and (illegal?) custom firmware) to become legitimate again without buying a second console, and re-secure the PS3?

Because it's seems to be popular and cool to make Sony out to be the bad man in all this, and the hackers the poor victims.

Daz, and any one else that is pro open PS3: what are you hoping to achieve with it once it's open? I know you seem to buy every dongle or whatever that can open pre-all this bollocks. But what is it you hope to achieve?

If people want high end computing power, you can exceed the PS3s capabilities with a PC.

Sony sold the console as a games machine, BluRay player, media centre etc etc. To go back to the car analogy, you buy a car to drive from A to B. Do you then get it home and chop it up, to refashion the drive shaft as a propeller and turn it into a helicopter because that's what you actually wanted? No. So why is the PS3 any different.

Admittedly, Sony used the otherOS as a selling point. But why did they remove it? Oh yeah - cos of dickheads trying to break the security. So that's a circular argument full of shit.

I hope all people Sony take to court end up in prison. Then at least they might get laid :)

what do I want to see?

A decent web browser for one thing, a media player capable of playing HD .mkv files and also with new and better visualisations, snes emulation (started already), and maybe things like a solid ftp server making backing up YOUR games, savegames and any other files on the ps3. I hate the fact that if you create a backup, then install a new hdd that backup is nearly worthless. Custom dynamic themes and more detailed dynamic thems would be nice too.

I dont feel sorry for either party, both have their reasons for doing what they do/did.

i just hope good can come out of it for EVERYONE.

on a another note, would you be as pissed if hacking the ps3 required a modchip instead of a 5mb firmware patch? It certainly makes things less accessible if its modchip only.
