My dad used to fly Vulcan bombers for the RAF, so obviously had a load of RAF mates. I remember one day as a little un being dragged to hospital to see one of his best friends who was in a pretty bad way...
Turns out he was flying a low level insertion, but their Chinook hit a mountain side. The co-pilot was killed out right, and he lost his leg, amongst other serious injuries. They only managed to survive because the Chinook was full of SAS who are trained to survive in hostile environments, as they had to spend the night on the side of the mountain.
They flew into the mountain because there was no sense of scale apparently. They all just sat there watching it approach, but didn't know how close it was...
