I want to do some "scanning" :D
But I need a really good high gain wifi antenna (and USB wifi adapter), but they need to be cheap.

Would this be any good?

Ok
Scanning you will gain nothing,

You need a Device that is open source or has a open kernels.

I have a Device that lets me, Collect, Inject and Flood.
This is very good for cracking pretty much any Wifi.

WPA2 yer it will take longer, but if someone is on there doing Torrents or something, VERY easy to inject and collect Unique packets to decrypt there Key.

You also need a Collection of tools for the best results.
Have you any in mind?

You really want something containing the Realtek RTL8187L chipset

I use: AWUS036H
Has a super long range, and the feature to change the Frequency, (Illegal in the EU)

Let me know your Goal and i can provide you with some Basic Programs leading up to more complicated stuff, and give you a run through it.

I haven't even tried looking for wifi cracking software.

So what ideal hardware do I need?

Ok,
You dont want hardware till you know your Softwware
When you know your software your looking for Compatible hardware,

What Base OS are you going to use?
Linux?

Aircrack is your starting point for anything,
For WEP Cracking and Packet Sniffing and Decrypting.

Check there Compatibility List:

My Device is pretty dam hot, On reliability and signal strenght,
There is also antenna you can get that will give you even better range.

Thats mine :)

5db seems A bit poor, but I suppose it's a start.
at £20 it's not a bad introductory price.
then add a high gain antenna later

I could use Linux as a vm but primarily windows.

order placed, expected delivery date 10/2/2012

cool and the gang.

You dont need anything stronger than that, You can get Stronger Antennas for it if you really want.

Or you can plug anything into it,
Point being you need things in that open source or open kernel so packet injecting is possible,
Or all you will end up with is 1000000 Packets an no way to Decrypt them.

it's more out of curiosity, how many wifi signals I can pick up, then I'll look at hacking and decrypting.

the more choice I have the better right?

I'll probably start with wep as its insecurity is so old and well documented.

Wrong, Cracking dont come in a day.
Comes in time,

More choice means less chance, as you keep moving back and forth.

To see how Wifi Signals you can pickup, its heafty investment for that.
If you dont by the right device, you wont be decrypting or hacking anything.

Not every device will work, You have to be able to inject and do a various other things before you get a bit on Unique data back to do anything.

To inject you need compatable devices.
Dont rush into it, Mistake i made years ago.

got it, set it up and scanned to see what I can see...
About 30 Wifi signals, and 3 are WEP, the rest are WPA2.

But WEP? In this day and age?

Just installed VMWare, about to install Ubuntu

WEP, Default router provided back in the days.
ISP do not issue new routers, and if your not in with the Lingo, Yur stuck on WEP.

Its a bit shit!! But yes, there crackable within minutes.

If you installing VMWare, You will want to have a look at a Proper OS.

NOW DO NOT GIVEUP!!!!!!!!! thats all i will say

Your OS you will want, BackTrack!!!
Thats all you will ever need.

Its for security testing. And its preloaded with EVERYTHING.

Other than that, you want to look at Ubuntu.
There will be alot of reading you will need to do, Alot to understand.
And then what do you do when your in someone elses network.....

Thats where you need to learn about Windows Exploits and how to use them.
Its a endless game, and takes alot of patents,
I will be happy to help with asmuch as i can, and guide you through it.

But you wont get anywhere if you chuck then hat in on the first go.
Its a patents games.
and its Hard, i still struggle, Alot of commands to learn.

No GUI Interfaces for anything decent.

Are you sure you do not live next to me? I had WEP until a week ago because my lodger had problems with his laptop connecting to anything but WEP.
