Firmware 1.60 - can anyone remember that far back?


Find out what features are included in PS3 system software update 1.60.

An update to the PS3 system software was made available on March 22, 2007. With this update, the system software is version 1.60. Features updated in system software update 1.60 include:

Main features that are new or revised

Precision Zoom and Resolution settings (Internet Browser)


Precision Zoom: You can automatically enlarge with pinpoint accuracy the area on the screen where the cursor is located. By analysing the web page source, the system automatically calculates the best enlargement rate based on the area where the cursor is located.

Resolution settings: You can adjust web page size for optimal viewing based on the PS3 system's video output resolution. A setting to reduce flickering of the screen when outputting in interlace mode has also been added.

Full-size keyboard


You can now use a full-size on-screen keyboard to enter text.

Folding@home™


Folding@home™ is a distributed computing project that is run by Stanford University. The goal of the project is to research protein folding mechanisms in the hope that this will lead to medical treatments for related diseases. By starting the Folding@home™ program that is installed on a PS3 system, you can participate in this project over the Internet.

Remote play via an access point


You can now use the remote play feature from a PSP system via an access point.

Addition of Danish, Norwegian, Finnish and Swedish as system languages


Danish, Norwegian, Finnish and Swedish have been added as options in [System Language] under [System Settings].

General

Background downloading of data is now supported.
Support for playback of BD-RE (Blu-ray Disc Rewritable) ver 3.0 has been added.
The PS3 system can now automatically detect an HDMI connection to a TV. If the PS3 system is turned on with an HDMI cable connected, the screen for switching video output settings will be displayed automatically.*

* Will not function unless the TV that is connected by the HDMI cable is turned on.

Settings

You can now select the character set to be used for file names under [System Settings] > [Character Set].
[Enable WMA Playback] has been added as an option under [System Settings].
[Disc Auto-Start] has been added as an option under [System Settings].
You can now restore backed up data to another PS3 system under [System Settings] > [Backup Utility].
You can now register a keyboard and a mouse under [Accessory Settings] > [Register Bluetooth® Device].
[Remote Play Settings] has been added as an option.


Music

Support for playback of DSD (Direct Stream Digital) discs has been added.*
* These discs are music discs created using SonicStage Mastering Studio Version 2.1 or later or DSD Direct Version 2.0 or later (both Sony products, sold separately).


Video

Motion JPEG and AVCHD (.m2ts) have been added as playable formats.

Network

[Download Management] has been added as a feature.


Friends

[Start New Chat] has been added as an option.

Version 1.70 added PS3 - PSP savegame compatability:

An update to the PS3 system software was made available on April 19, 2007. With this update, the system software is version 1.70. Features updated in system software update 1.70 include:

A feature has been added for playing downloaded PlayStation® format software.

A feature has been added for downloading PlayStation format software from PlayStation®Store and then playing the downloaded software on the PS3 system. Some titles can be played on both PS3 and PSP (PlayStation Portable) systems*.

* PlayStation format software compatible with this feature is scheduled to be made available soon. Check PlayStation®Store for details.

You can now use the vibration function of certain accessories for use with PlayStation 2 format software.

Game

You can now use Game Save data from PlayStation format software on both the PS3 system and the PSP system.

By copying Game Save data from the PS3 system to the PSP system, you can do the following:

By copying Game Save data that was created on PS3 to your PSP, you can continue playing the game from where you left off when you leave the house.¹
By copying Game Save data that was created on PSP to your PS3, you can continue playing the game from where you left off when you get home.¹
You can copy Game Save data that was created on PlayStation (PS one) or PlayStation 2 to the PSP system and use the Game Save data on the PSP system.²

¹ Requires PlayStation format software that is compatible with both PSP and PS3. Software compatible with this feature is scheduled be made available soon.
² Copy the saved data to the PS3 system's Hard Disk Drive (HDD) using a Memory Card Adaptor (sold separately), and then copy the saved data to the PSP system. PlayStation format software that is compatible with the PSP system is required to use the saved data on the PSP system.

Copying Game Save data from a PS3 system to a PSP system

Connect the PS3 system and the PSP system together using a USB cable (you must have Memory Stick Duo media inserted in the PSP system).
Select [USB Connection] under [Settings] on the PSP system.
Select the icon for the saved data from [Game] > [Memory Card Utility (PS/PS2)] > [Internal Memory Card (PS)] on the PS3 system, and then press the TRIANGLE button.
Select [Copy] from the options menu, and then select [PSP™ (PlayStation®Portable)] as the save destination. To make saved data usable on a PSP system you must convert the data format. If a confirmation screen is displayed, select [Yes] to proceed.
Select the save destination for the saved data. Multiple [Internal Memory Card (PS)] will be created on the PSP system's Memory Stick Duo for each game. Select any of these as the save destination.

Copying Game Save data from a PSP system to a PS3 system

Connect the PS3 and PSP systems using a USB cable (you must have Memory Stick Duo media inserted in the PSP system).
Select [USB Connection] under [Settings] on the PSP system.
Select the icon for the saved data from [Game] > [Memory Card Utility (PS/PS2)] > [PSP™ (PlayStation®Portable)] on the PS3 system, and then press the TRIANGLE button.
Select [Copy] from the options menu, and then select the save destination.

To use this feature, the system software of the PSP system must be version 3.40 or later.
To view saved data created using PSP system software version 3.30 or earlier on a PS3 system, you must convert the data format. If a confirmation screen is displayed, select [Yes].
If you place the Memory Stick Duo media in the PS3 system's Memory Stick Duo slot or use a USB adaptor, the saved data will not be recognised. You must connect the PS3 system and the PSP system together using a USB cable.

Note:

This system software update includes all features contained in previous versions.
The new system software will preserve any settings previously made to the PlayStation 3.
Depending on the software title, you may not be able to play without first updating the PS3 system software.
Do not perform updates using any data other than the official update data provided by Sony Computer Entertainment over a network or on disc media, and do not perform updates by methods other than those described in the product documentation or in this site. If an update is performed using data from another source, by another method, or with a PS3 system that has been altered or modified in any way, the PS3 system may not operate properly and may not be able to install the official update data. Any of these actions may void the PS3 system warranty and affect your ability to obtain warranty services and repair services from Sony Computer Entertainment.

Saved Data Utility for PSP™ games


[Saved Data Utility (minis)] under [Game] has been changed to [Saved Data Utility (minis/PSP™)].

You can now back up saved data for PSP™ games by copying it to the PlayStation®3 Hard Disk Drive.

Isn't it a given that 1.xx software from anything would have more fixes/additions than when the software has reached 3.xx due to version 1.xx being for want of a better word early software.

Not necessarily. Features added to warrant jumping a full major version could have been buggy as shit. Buggier than any orginal features thus requiring bigger fixes.

3.66 is out today, and it's mandatory.
