YPs thoughts on MOH

right i rented this a few days hence so its about time i scratted down my thoughts.

I still have the original medal of honor for PS1 and it was a great game in its time, Now i think the market is saturated with First person shooters, oh for a game of HD Doom.....

the following is based on the PS3 copy

Graphics
seem to be fine, acceptable at the current generation of consoles im sure the PC version will be superior, some times it looks brilliant and really moody, especially one time while your silently stalking through a afgan mountain top with only the moon for illumination its almoast etheral :D but then you get horrendous moment where the textures go titsup, one mission started with me hiding in a flock of goats while my team mates subdued the sheprered (non leathly these are merkins of course) and the site of a pixilated goat made me nearly crap myself it was like a 4 legged version of the dough boy  overal they are adequate although im sure Modern Warfare 2, Bad Company 2, Killzone 2, Halo Reach put them to shame.

sound
crack bang whistle thwump, stuff sounds bloody excellent especially when an AC-130 is bringing the rain in danger close (sorry) i only have two speakers to play with but it all sounds great dialouge seems authentic and the music is very very good, its rare i think that you find a good game soundtrack but the music is very 'earnest' and ties up with the story well i think. there is even an amusing quip about rap music in game, in your face MW!

Plot
pretty basic stuff, you flit between different characters in varying roles the apache gunner was a fun sequence as was holding off what seemed like the whole of the taliban single handedly in one sequence, people say thought provoking things, war quotes appear on the screen, people die, lots. i have one bone to pick with EA and its that it doesnt mention the SBS partaking in the capture of Bagram airbase at all, no again yanks single handedly storm the place again. but mostly the same war stuff your used to now, no surprises and you can see its all going to end in one big cluster[BEEP]

Gameplay
again its acceptable, controls seem fine, a bit vague at first but you get used to them, the shooting its quite solid and the cover mechanic that is available isnt to intrusive, i also like the slide feature quite cool, just a shame you cant slide tackle a taliban and twist his head off but thats me...

the enemy AI is at once lethal and pin point accurate and thick as a brick, quite happilly funneling down rocky valleys into your gunsight, ive never been in combat but i dont think the taliban are crack shots with AK-47s at 700 meters

its easy to rush around diving for cover popping up and pop heads too and enjoy it without getting frustrated, i played it on medium and didnt have too much of a challenge.

multiplayer
the multiplayer is probably going to be one of the biggest draws and its a odd beast at first, like the bastard love child of MW2 and bad company after a night of heavy drinking. the action is quite condensed and a bit claustrophobic, im sure twitchy modern warfare players will feel at home but may feel handicapped by the vague controls while battlefield players will feel hemmed in and pee'd off with the campers who seem to infest every corner, team deathmatch will no doubt be a refuge for the MW2 refugees, combat missions will feel familiar to Battlefield players and also MW2 players and operate over larger levels where one minute you need to demolish a gate with C4 and then hold a hanger until the area is secured.

i hated it at first now ive grown to like it BUT it still doesnt beat Bad Company 2s expansive maps and vehicles thrown in, yes there is a bradly but big whoop, progress is fair and steady there isnt much in the way of unlocks or customisation but its enough for you to find your niche i suppose and the kill streak rewards dont come piling on until someone nukes you to death like in MW2.

id say it sits inbetween MW2 and battlefield in the MP stakes

summary
i think EA have planted this right where they wanted to smack bang in the middle of Modern Warfare and Battlefield and hope it appeals to both, but when both crowds comes together who knows what will happen, the MW2 lot will probably sit in a corner and no scope you in the back :)

its an adequate enough game and fit for purpose, but no more than that id say, if you buy it purely for the single player you will be bitterly dissapointed as its less than 7 hours long by my reckoning.

should you get it if your a FPS nut? no imho rent it and see.

i would agree with you on most part, minus the killstreaks.
the killstreaks are ridiculous once you get going, once your past rocket strike it's way too easy to get the rest.

The fact killstreak kills count towards more killstreak rewards is ridiculous.

I was playing Helmand Valley earlier today as an attacker and i timed how long it took me to get a cruise missle once starting with a mortar strike.....only 63 seconds!!!

took the piss really.

I agree with both of you.
But allow me to add my own opinions:
Some of the maps are VERY unbalanced towards the attackers.
Helmand, I've had 2 cruise missiles in one game, 60+kills and 1 death FFS. It's so easy to snipe (read camp) and destroy the defenders, while they have little to no chance of taking me out.
It's because the defenders are in a concentrated area while the attackers could be anywhere.
The Airbase is exactly the same.
The only one that is balanced is the snowy mountains map.
Sorry but I cannot remember the names of the maps.
Killstreaks:
Kill 4 people with head shots, get the first arty strike, and you can work your way up to a cruise missile without firing another bullet. I know, I've done it. Sure you need to be smart about placing the strikes, but it's easier than you think.
LAG
OMFG this is appalling, I've setup a proxy on my PC and sniffed the incoming/outgoing packets, and I've yet to connect to a local (UK) server, they are either in the Netherlands, or in California. This makes it nigh on impossible to run out in the open, so camping is practically guarenteed.

Summary.
When it's playing good it's a great game, but when it's bad it's the worst and most frustrating multiplayer game I've ever played.
I've given up on the MP and I'm working towards the platinum, I only need about 4-5 hours total to complete the other MP game types to get the trophy, then its going to be traded in.

The vast majority of the trophies are easy peasy. Tier 1 might be a bit harder though as you only get one chance or it's back to the start.

it was quite amusing yesterday, every MOH game ive joined apart from TDM has ended in a win for my team, luck i suppose? anyway i joined a game yesterday and a friend of mine joined, you may have met him Zatochi, anyhoo he was on 15 mins and comms were down as my headset was charging, at 16mins i get a text on my phone saying

"worra load of shite im off"
:XD

to be fair we walked into the biggest sniper fest on helmand valley, other games ive played have been more balanced but still the fundamental problems remain

no she'll be going back to cockbuster on saturday and i think ill get transformers next to rent.

No doubt there will be die-hards playing in a months time but the majority will be getting rid.
I loved it the first 2 days, but by saturday I was onto my second joypad.

So thats what the DS looks like inside!
I've kept the battery, it might come in useful for a solar power project I have in mind.

Transformers is pretty good - but beware the online Pud, it's brutal LOL. It goes to completely the other extreme: snipers are rare, but many a time you'll die to a melee strike.

Luckily I'm done with the online trophies, but I need to so back and mop up some offline ones when I'm done with RUSE...
