Sony want to charge for the next playtv update because (they can?) they have worked hard on getting new features into it.
The new features are: Premium TV guide, text chat while watching Tv, and series link. Many people will agree that 2 of these features are useless while one of them should have been available from launch.

Regarding the pay aspect, this is what James Thorpe stated - "Hi, the development guys are constantly working hard to add as many new features as possible that have been requested across all markets. The new features in this update represent PlayStation’s strong community commitment. You will be able to get the software update on PS Store at a reasonble price. A lot of effort went into developing these features and they will make PlayTV a very unique product."

A lot of effort went into making these features. Yeah right, then why has it taken 2 years to add series link?

But others are suggesting that Sony might try to make PS3 updates a premium "feature" too.

Why oh why can't you download from PSN when playTV is recording????

TV maybe uses up all the hard drive cache? I would imagine writing that amount of data doesn't leave room for much else.

not true, you can still play any game you like while it's recording and you dont get any playback problems.
I suppose it's to make sure you dont record, play a game and download all at the same time, now that would be too much.

Yeah, but playing a game doesn't require massive amounts of writing to the HD. I'd imagine there are separate read and write caches.

Try installing a game while it's recording LOL. See what happens...
