I never thought it might come in handy today.
While my PS3 is fine, earlier on it crashed while playing BFBC, came up with a yellow light and started flashing red.

Like I said it did reboot and did continue playing BFBC for a few rounds, so for now, it's fine... but for how long?

Well, call it coincidence but mine died last night.
It had shown warning signs for just over a week.

But with the instructions on their website, it's now working again.
I'm down £24 for buying a heat gun, but I'm not having to shell out an extra £100 for Sony to replace it.

i fixed my mates 60GB (reconditioned) phat over the weekend, followed gilskys video , already had a heat gun so spent £1.99 at maplins for some thermal compound.....

anyway i need to look at things further, i have him up and running inrespect of switching his ps3 on and he can use the internet........heres the problem

PS3 does not recognise a disk in the drive, vidzone loads so far them freezes, same with BF1943.

any suggestions, format disk? i have a spare 40GB hard drive i can use........i'm concerned that it may be the actual disk reader

if vidzone freezes then a reformat might be in order

delete vidzone and bf1943, redownload and try again

get the download only games to work first then worry about the blu ray based games next

ok ill get the PS3 back and look at fixing the PSN games and applications adn take it from there

I'd go for a reformat, there's no knowing what was damaged when the PS3 shit itself and died.
But get his account up and running, then try one thing at once.


as for the blu-ray, if it's spinning up, then it's possibly just some dust on the lens, so a strip down of the drive might be in order.

But it goes to show that YLOD can be fixed even if it's only for a few weeks by reflowing the cheap and nasty solder that Sony put on the board.

Damn YLOD! :pissed_off: Needs to re-flow my board but since its the third time, i need to re-flux it as well. The problem is i can't find a pen type flux (non-clean & non-lead) on local electronic shops. What they have are all paste type, which I think wouldn't work according to gilksy's procedure. WTF! :pissed_off:

Now my question is, if I would buy a new slim twat PS3, can i swap my hard drive on the old Ps3 to the new one?? Will it work?? because i have lots and lots of files on my old HD. The thing is I wasn't been able to back-up my hard drive on the old PS3.

Nope, the HDD's are locked to each individual PS3.

If your old PS3 turns on, you can connect them both with an ethernet cable and tranfer all the stuff across...
