Update:
Rumour central is alive and well.
I've just read a tweet from Mathieulh, he thinks it's down to custom firmware, more specifically REBUG firmware. Rebug turns a default retail PS3 into a developer console, and he thinks it's this thats causing the problems. Now as I recall a recent update to this custom firmware added a lot more functionality, and some new extra toys, so it could be this kind of hacking thats caused the problem.
This along with an enormous traffic spike on the developer side of PSN could be causing the problem and not an actual hack.
Again this is just speculation, but Math is one of the most clued up PS3 hackers out there, so maybe he's onto something.

RT @Philious @Mathieulh so they're inferring it's hackers despite it being the idiots using rebug on their Dev servers lol, Sony suck arse!
How much do you wanna bet Sony assimilate people hoarding the dev servers/store on rebug to a security breach?

The most ridiculous thing i heard on signal radio today (about an hour ago) is it was due to skin fragments lmfao.. honestly, who comes up with
this?
anyway sony has updated:
http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/04/ ... -services/
seems it was hackers all along?

why didn't they admit to the intrusion in the first place rather than spin it out until today?

Update:
From the EU BlogWe sincerely regret that PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have been suspended, and we are working around the clock to bring them both back online. Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security.
We thank you for your patience to date and ask for a little more while we move towards completion of this project. We will continue to give you updates as they become available.
