People seem to forget why Sony removed Linux in the first place. Let's just remind ourselves shall we?yorkshirepudding wrote:its pathetic because some kiddie couldnt install linux on his PS3 he has deemed sony the antichrist
And look who's fucking name crops up - long before this court case and PSN outtage. So for all this bollocks about "we hacked it cos they removed other OS" is bullshit. They removed other OS because they were hacking that. And not just "they" - our beloved GeoHotCumUpHisArse.Sony plan to drop the Install Other OS feature from the PlayStation 3 via a new Firware update (3.21) due this Thursday.
Sony plans to drop the Install Other OS feature from the PlayStation 3 via a new Firmware update due this Thursday. The ability to install Linux distro’s on the popular console is a key feature of interest from the Open Source community and the move has already caused uproar on the Official PlayStation blog which is filling with comments of outrage from its small, but vocal, Linux user base.
Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry blog (via Gamesindustry.biz) considers this move to be a “pre-emptive strike” by Sony protecting themselves from possible cracked games being created and distributed in the future. It’s likely Sony consider George Hotz’s exploit which allowed read/write access to the console via a Linux install as proof of concept.
“In taking such a measure to counter the hack, the logical conclusion is that Sony wants to the limit overall number of PS3s out there potentially capable of running copied games – an extraordinary pre-emptive strike against the possibility of piracy,” wrote Digital Foundry Director, Richard Leadbetter.
Firmware 3.21 will be released this coming Thursday and though it wont be mandatory, a failure to update will inhibit certain popular features including playing games and movies that take advantage of the new firmware.

The PSN store is open at last, but the Welcome Back offer isn't live yet, but Sony are promising it will be soon.
In the meantime, here's a reminder of what the offer entails:
Now that certain PSN services have been restored and you’re once again enjoying online gaming, it seems a good time to confirm what is being offered as part of the Welcome Back programme.
Once we restore PlayStation Store, which will be just a little while longer, you will have the opportunity to claim your Welcome Back gifts. Please note that the Welcome Back programme is only available for those countries with access to PlayStation Store*.
All existing PlayStation Network members will be able to access the following from PlayStation Store*:
Two PS3 games from the following list:
LittleBigPlanet
Infamous*
Wipeout HD/Fury
Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty
Dead Nation*
For those with PSP accounts, you will also be eligible to download two PSP games from the following list:
LittleBigPlanet PSP
ModNation PSP
Pursuit Force
Killzone Liberation*
- 30 days free PlayStation Plus membership for non PS Plus subscribers*
- Existing PlayStation Plus subscribers will be given 60 days free subscription.
- For existing Music Unlimited subscribers, you will be given 30 days free subscription.
- We are working on a Welcome Back offer in PlayStation Home and will share that when it is confirmed.
I would like to thank all of the developers and publishers involved in this programme for their support in making this happen. We certainly couldn’t have done it without you.
You will be able to access this content once PlayStation Store comes back online and we are doing everything we can to make that happen as soon as possible.
Thank you for your support and keep checking back on the blog for more information.
For eligibility for the welcome back programme consumers must be an account holder on 20 April 2011. Specific details about these offers and eligibility requirements will be posted as the services go live. All existing PSN registrants have 30 days from when the welcome back programme goes live to redeem their content.
For the German market, InFamous and Dead Nation will be replace with Super Stardust HD and Hustle Kings in the selection of PS3 games.
For the German market, Pursuit Force and Killzone Liberation will be replaced with Everybody’s Golf 2 and Buzz Junior Jungle Party in the selection of PSP games. Killzone Liberation will not offer online gameplay functionality.
Access to the 30 days free PS Plus subscription is only available for those countries where PS Plus is offered. You will have access to the PS Plus content planned for May for 30 days. Access to the free games and exclusive features finishes at the end of the 30-day subscription period. Anything you buy with exclusive discounts, dynamic themes and premium avatars are yours to keep forever.

You can breathe a small sigh of relief, it looks like the lulz hack was just on Sony BMG and Sony Video databases.
But looking at the administrator and manager passwords it wouldn't take a genius to hack those sites.

if you want to look for yourselves.
Summary of the stolen data:
SonyPictures.com has been owned,
this is its SQLi hole:
## http://www.sonypictures.com/homevideo/g ... p?id=12838 ##
TEAR THE LIVING SHIT OUT OF IT WHILE YOU CAN; TAKE FROM THEM EVERYTHING!
Contents of our plunder:
## Sony_Pictures_International_AUTOTRADER_USERS.txt ##
-- In this file you will find just under 12,500 customers of Sony;
this includes dates of birth, addresses, emails, full names,
passwords, user IDs, and personal phone numbers.
## Sony_Pictures_International_BEAUTY_USERS.txt ##
-- In this file you will find just under 21,000 customers of Sony;
this is a simple email/password drop. Enjoy your account stealing.
## Sony_Pictures_International_COUPONS.txt ##
-- In this file you will find just under 20,000 Sony music coupons;
please note that there are 3.5 million coupons to take - get 'em.
## Sony_Pictures_International_DELBOCA_USERS.txt ##
-- In this file you will find just under 18,000 customers of Sony;
this is a simple email/password drop. Again, enjoy your stealing.
## Sony_Pictures_International_MUSIC_CODES.txt ##
-- In this file you will find just under 67,000 Sony music codes;
they're like magnets, we simply have no idea how they work.
## Sony_Pictures_International_TABLE_LAYOUT.txt ##
-- In this file you will find the layout of the database;
that means you can easily see where to steal things from.
Note that the database contains far more user information/coupons
than we took. The point is that we had control of them; all of them.
We leave the rest up to you - steal as much as you want, go forth!
ADDITIONAL OWNAGE:
## Sony_BMG_Music_Entertainment_NETHERLANDS ##
-- This file contains the user database of BMG Netherlands;
it's around 600 usernames, emails, and passwords. Enjoy.
## Sony_BMG_Music_Entertainment_BELGIUM ##
-- This file contains the Sony admin database of BMG Belgium;
also lots of barcodes, release dates, and other juicy shit.
But looking at the administrator and manager passwords it wouldn't take a genius to hack those sites.
