I don't think geohot personally has anything to do with the attacks... but it wouldn't be the first time I'm wrong.

I do know that Sony pissed off a lot of people when they went after him, and Sony will be their main target for a long time to come.

i know sony have "upset" some people by wagging their finger and saying oh no you cant do this to your PS3 but what is these peoples beef really?

Thats the problem isn't it, its not Sony who really suffers, it's the users of their services, and while we suffer, the hackers loose any public backing they may have had in the first place.

Or it might be hackers trying to inflict death by a thousand cuts.

In a statement this morning Sony have given an estimate of the costs of the PSN Hack. The statement is an update on their financial forecasts that they have produced ahead of their more extensive financial results that we are expecting later this week.

Naturally they do not refer to the episode as a hack, calling it “the unauthorised network access”. They state that their estimate of the currently known costs resulting from the cyber attack are ¥18 billion. In monetary terms you are more likely to understand that is £137m or $221m.

Understandably of far larger impact to their financial situation is the Great East Japan Earthquake and its after-effects. For the year to 31st March 2011 Sony say they expect it to have reduced their operating income by ¥17bn (£129m, $208m).

The impact of the earthquake and tsunami to Sony’s bottom line will of course be much greater during their current financial year as it happened so close to the end of their last. For the year ending 31st March 2012 they anticipate a reduction of approximately ¥150bn (£1.14bn, $1.84).

wouldnt it be interesting if microsoft, or nintendo took advantage of the hacked PS3 subject and hired some hackers to destroy the network? industrial subterfuge?

I'm betting that suddenly the cost of upgrading the Apache server is looking a lot more favourable... Maybe next time news of their outdated software is broadcast across hacker forums they'll stump up the upgrade cost instead of thinking "we'll do it tomorrow".

hindsight is always 20-20 vision.

You don't need hindsight to realise that hackers discussing your outdated software with known security holes across their forums is an issue, which Sony did, and ignored, before PSN went down.

Rumour has it that the store will return tomorrow. It's been down since the 21st April.

PSN goes down at 16.00 today for scheduled maintenance, adding fuel to our earlier story that the PlayStation Store will return soon.

We reported earlier today that PS Plus subscriptions had now been extended, suggesting the imminent reinstatement of the PlayStation Store.

With Sony now issuing a scheduled maintenance warning for PSN, we are now almost certain that the store will be live once again upon its return.

Here is what Sony posted.

PlayStation Network is offline for scheduled maintenance from 16:00 on Tuesday 24 May 2011 until 00:00 on Wednesday 25 May 2011, GMT.

During the maintenance, you will be unable to access the following services:

PlayStation Store on PS3 and PSP.
PlayStation Network Account Management.
PlayStation Network Account Registration.

In addition, you will not be able to sign in to PlayStation Network from eu.playstation.com. If you wish to play online during the maintenance, please ensure you sign in to PSN before 16:00 on Tuesday 24 May 2011.

During this maintenance, you can continue to collect in-game trophies and these will be updated on your profile once PlayStation Network is back up and running.

If you have any questions about this down time, feel free to visit the official PlayStation Forums at community.eu.playstation.com where you can post your query and a member of the moderation team will get back to you.

PlayStation Network will undergo routine maintenance today, between 16:00 BST and 00:00 BST. If you wish to play online during the maintenance, please ensure you sign in to PSN before 16:00.

The latest information I have on PlayStation Store is that we are aiming to have it live by the end of May. Contrary to popular rumours, it will not be reopening tomorrow but we will let you know here as soon as the date is confirmed.

The store is so going to either crash or be totally unusable as soon as it re-opens due to the sheer volume of traffic. It will be like end-users conducting their own denial of service attack. Alarms will go off at Sony HQ. Management will think Anonymous are back... Hope they don't panic pull the plug again lol.

Sony Ericsson's Canadian online store hacked, more than 2,000 customers' data taken



The hackers just won't give poor Sony a break, will they? Following the infamous PSN breach last month and an attack on the company's Greek online music service earlier this week, Sony Ericsson has now seen another intrusion that extracted personal data of more than 2,000 Canadian Eshop customers. Fortunately, the company claims that passwords taken were encrypted and no credit card details were lost, but this is still worrisome nevertheless. Right now, the Eshop service has been taken off line -- for the sake of Sir Howard and his Japanese chums, let's just hope that this will be the last Sony breach we hear about.



It can only go on so much Longer before Sony just giveup!!!
