I think you pretty much summed it up Sy. I love wandering into game and checking out the cheap games, but a) I'm rarely just wandering in town in such a situation and b) if there's a game I want, I will pre-order it online. Not because it's a couple of quid cheaper, but because it may come early and it's way more convenient.
No high street retail is safe if the product can be sold online and delivered.
Until petrol prices rise to the point where delivery is not economically viable...
I think it is the end for game, I'm sorry for the staff who will be uncerimoniuosly dumped on.
Today did see a flurry of shares being sold... and amazingly being bought, it even raised the share price a little.
Maybe someone is waiting in the wings for a takeover?
rumours abound of a buyout by Walmart.
Asda has tried to get into the games market over the past couple of years, with a range of products vastly cheaper than Game, second hand games and peripherals, this could be a major step forward for Walmart/Asda.
But that's not all, Comet owners OpCapita and GameStop are also rumoured to be interested.
Now I wish I'd bought a few thousand shares at 1 pence per share on Monday!
They are still trading under administration, it's not complete "game over" yet.
It just means that the orginal owners no longer control the buisness and if it is administered correctly and some debts managed and a new owner is sought, it could still live.
The best thing they could do really is close all the shops like they are, to save monies on wages/bills/rent and all those overheads and continue working as a online retailer... but if they can't find a legit deal to takeover it, then... prolly close for good.

Gamestation shops are closing or being folded into Game stores.
But like I mentioned earlier, Halifax has both, and in all honesty, GameStation is the better shop for gamers. The staff are knowledgeable gamers, the prices are better for both new and used too. How this is so I've no idea, they are part of the same company.
Game is trying to compete in an internet domain, and we've said it before, retail will probably die off in the next few years, with internet retailers shipping before official release dates, being cheaper, and having more choice, it's going to be hard for retail to compete.
With supermarkets also getting some action from midnight releases and used games, and very competitive pricing to boot, it's going to be hard for the dedicated retail market to stay alive.
i remember a time and this is donkeys ago when game shops were quite independant things, owned by individuals. there was this really cool games shop in the ridings shopping centre in Wakefield west yorkshire that had the interior done out like an industrial ship and the sold every fucking thing imaginable C64 games, sega, nintendo, PC, Neo Geo it was like a geeks god damn fucking gold mine, and eventually as the other places started selling games and the likes of Electronics Boutique came about they gradually died of, shame because they felt more true to gaming culture.
i always used to think gaming culture was somewhat of a counter culture, but it got big with money and then well......
An explosion now and then is nice. Keeps the mind sharp,
So that's Woolworth's, and this year alone, Comet, Clinton cards, JJB, peacocks, blacks leisure, La Senza, Jane Norman, Habitat, Focus DIY, and Thornton's via diversification.
that's 48,000 retail jobs lost in less than 12 months. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-13977255
