OK, Astro had a crack at this..

Now it's my turn.

Black Magic Intensity Pro...

This is a brilliant piece of hardware, it will do both HDMI capture and RGB, from SD all the way to 1080p, and colour at 4:2:2. This mean you get the best 1:1 capture quality and the best colour range possible.
It's a PCI-E or PCI Express card, it slots into a mainboard, installs in seconds, and comes with a break out cable for capturing via RGB/RCA jacks.
The actual capture is handled via a simple interface that is bundled with this, or Sony Vegas, and Adobe Premier Pro CS3/CS4. Also built in is a nifty screen grab, allowing you to take screenshots. Take a look at the gallery for plenty of examples of quality.
What does it need hardware wise? It needs a monster pc, a good dual core processor is a must, as is 2-4gigabytes of RAM. Also for playback, a high end video card, and for storage, at least 2x Raid 0 hard drives. It will compress on the fly, making storage less of a problem, but if your system is not upto the task, you'll loose sound, and frames, and get poor results.
If your PC is upto the task, there's nothing better for capturing.
My pc is'nt upto it, and therefore I dont capture movies, I just grab screenshots.

Hauppauge HD-PVR

Now this is a great bit of hardware, you can grab with a low end pc, well, lowish. It handles the compression for you, it transfers the files to your pc via USB2. Only thing is does'nt do is screen grabs.
Storage is around 1gig per hour or just over, playback is handled by your PC, so it needs to be beefy for that, but for capture, it will work with modern low end machines. Mines a Celeron 333, 2 gig of ram, 500gig SATA hdd, and it manages capture fine from this kit, but struggles like hell with the Black Magic Intensity Pro.
I've already created several video's, checkout the mess-hall movie theatre at the bottom of your screen, Gran Turismo intro is one of mine. Looks very good, and audio sounds great too.
It can handle SD upto 1080i, but it does'nt have the same colour range as the BMIP, so it wont look as nice, still looks great though and since it handles the compression, no high end pc required.
Capture bit rates are variable too, you can compress to your hearts content, or set it high and get brilliant picture quality. Mine is set to 12mbit per second, quite high, but not top end.

I want to get a PVR one day, but I need to justify the cost (or come into some dollar).

Will it work with a Mac?

To be fair to the HD PVR issues against the BMIP colour correction can be done in Vegas and screengrabs can be done afterwards in GOM Player or VLC.

If fucking developers got their shit together (Pixel Junk games excluded) we would all be able to record YouTube videos via the XMB anyway.

Lazy cunts.

The API is there for recording, and the same for screenshots. Why the hell they're not ON by default is a mystery.

PJ games could easily be HD too.

It'd be another reason to piss off the Xbox fanboys.
