Service Back Online By End of May
gay bro.
That's not really what it says though m8 - it's just regurgitating what we already know... Online gaming next week, store by end of the month.

Sony offer $1million fraud compensation insurance, and a personal letter from Howard Stringer:
Dear Friends,

I know this has been a frustrating time for all of you.

Let me assure you that the resources of this company have been focused on investigating the entire nature and impact of the cyber-attack we’ve all experienced and on fixing it. We are absolutely dedicated to restoring full and safe service as soon as possible and rewarding you for your patience. We will settle for nothing less.

To date, there is no confirmed evidence any credit card or personal information has been misused, and we continue to monitor the situation closely. We are also moving ahead with plans to help protect our customers from identity theft around the world. A program for U.S. PlayStation Network and Qriocity customers that includes a $1 million identity theft insurance policy per user was launched earlier today and announcements for other regions will be coming soon.

As we have announced, we will be offering a “Welcome Back” package to our customers once our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are up and running. This will include, among other benefits, a month of free PlayStation Plus membership for all PSN customers, as well as an extension of subscriptions for PlayStation Plus and Music Unlimited customers to make up for time lost.

As a company we — and I — apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused by this attack. Under the leadership of Kazuo Hirai, we have teams working around the clock and around the world to restore your access to those services as quickly, and as safely, as possible.

I know some believe we should have notified our customers earlier than we did. It’s a fair question. As soon as we discovered the potential scope of the intrusion, we shut down the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services and hired some of the best technical experts in the field to determine what happened. I wish we could have gotten the answers we needed sooner, but forensic analysis is a complex, time-consuming process. Hackers, after all, do their best to cover their tracks, and it took some time for our experts to find those tracks and begin to identify what personal information had — or had not — been taken.

As a result of what we discovered we notified you of the breach. Our investigation is ongoing, and we are upgrading our security so that if attacks like this happen again, our defenses will be even stronger.

In the last few months, Sony has faced a terrible earthquake and tsunami in Japan. But now we are facing a very man-made event – a criminal attack on us — and on you — and we are working with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies around the world to apprehend those responsible.

In the coming days, we will restore service to the networks and welcome you back to the fun. I wanted to personally reach out and let you know that we are committed to serving you to the very best of our ability, protecting your information better than ever, and getting you back to what you signed up for – all the games and great entertainment experiences that you expect from Sony.

With best regards,
Howard Stringer

PSN final stages of testing:
Today our global network and security teams at Sony Network Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment began the final stages of internal testing of the new system, an important step towards restoring PlayStation Network and Qriocity services.

As previously mentioned, we’ve been working around the clock to rebuild the network and enhance protections of your personal data. It’s our top priority to ensure your data is safe when you begin using the services again.

We understand that many of you are eager to again enjoy the PlayStation Network and Qriocity entertainment services that you love, so we wanted you to be aware of this milestone and our progress. We will provide additional updates as soon as we can.

A third attack is planned, but this time the information is going public: From c-net
A group of hackers says it is planning another wave of cyberattacks against Sony in retaliation for its handling of the PlayStation Network breach.

An observer of the Internet Relay Chat channel used by the hackers told CNET today that a third major attack is planned this weekend against Sony's Web site. The people involved plan to publicize all or some of the information they are able to copy from Sony's servers, which could include customer names, credit card numbers, and addresses, according to the source. The hackers claim they currently have access to some of Sony's servers.

Should the planned attack succeed, it would be the latest blow in a series of devastating security breaches of Sony's servers over the past month. The failure of Sony's server security has ignited investigations by the FBI, the Department of Justice, Congress, and the New York State Attorney General, a well as data security and privacy authorities in the U.K., Canada, and Taiwan.

Several weeks ago the hacker group known as Anonymous targeted several Sony Web sites, including Sony.com and SonyStyle.com, with a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack in retaliation for what its members saw as Sony's unfair legal action against hacker George Hotz. Two weeks ago Sony's PlayStation Network, along with its Qriocity service and Sony Online, were the target of an attack that exposed the personal information of more than 100 million Sony customers. Sony was forced to shut down PSN, Qriocity, and Sony Online, and is currently working to bring them back online after rebuilding the security of its servers.

Sony says it doesn't know who orchestrated what it's calling a "highly sophisticated, planned" attack, but it has dropped hints that the group Anonymous is involved. Kazuo Hirai, chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment, told a Congressional subcommittee in a letter yesterday that the intruders on its servers planted a file named "Anonymous" containing the statement "We are Legion," part of the group's tagline.

Anonymous issued a statement yesterday denying it was involved in the PSN breach. "While we are a distributed and decentralized group, our 'leadership' does not condone credit card theft," the statement said.

Now it seems the same group of hackers that was able to infiltrate the PSN servers is planning to hit back against Sony.

Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

These hackers are like the a-hole tube drivers that strike in London to whine about whatever. Their strike doesn't necessarily affect the target of their whining, it just causes huge inconvenience for those that use the services.

I realise most of you don't live in London, so probably can't relate, but I wish both groups would fuck off and get a real life.

+1
I'm begining to think that another attack right now is NOT in anyones interest at all. Doing so will not hurt Sony anymore than whats happened in the past 3 weeks, all it will do is create animosity towards anonymous, and they need the public backing them.

It sounds to me more like a personal vendetta against Sony and not a fight for freedom of speech/expression.

Kicking someone when they're down, week, feeble, unable to defend themselves or fight back (Ok Sony are a big strong company so maybe the analogy isn't the best one I could use) is bordering on evil intent.

Sony issue more stalling tactics:
As you may know, we’ve begun the process of restoring the service through internal testing of the new system. We’re still working to confirm the security of the network infrastructure, as well as working with a variety of outside entities to confirm with them of the security of the system. Verifying the system security is vital for the process of restoration. Additional comprehensive system checks and testing are still required, and we must complete that process before bringing the systems online.

As you’ve heard us say, our utmost priorities are the security of the network and ensuring your data is safe. We won’t restore the services until we can test the system’s strength in these respects.

When we held the press conference in Japan last week, based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week. We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system. We know many of you are wanting to play games online, chat with your friends and enjoy all of the services PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have to offer, and trust me when I say we’re doing everything we can to make it happen. We will update you with more information as soon as we have it. We apologize for the delay and inconvenience of this network outage.

In all honesty, thats what it sounds like to me, stalling tactics.

If someone at Sony had said in the begining it will take 4 weeks to restore partial services, a lot of people will have jumped ship immediately, but by saying it'll take a week, another week, a few more days, and now another vague undetermined amount of time... it keeps people holding out for hope that it will be soon.

I dont think it will, it'll be another week at least.

To be fair though, it's like software development - it's very hard to put realistic timescales on these things upfront. This is why game's tied to films tend to be turds and often riddled with bugs: because they must conform to a rigid timeline. Similarly, it's why iD tend to put out great games: because they don't tether themselves to a schedule.

As with games, I would rather wait longer and end up with a better product, than have it rushed out broken.

I guess you're right, but I think Sony knew from day one that this is bigger than a week long unscheduled maintenence.

I agree with the stalling comment daz.

Also it's no good comparing this to development of game, not even the same.
Servers can be complicated, but there is something they are not telling us, it doesn't take trained professional server/rack monkeys this long to fix a breach.

Sorry, sony cannot honestly expect people to fucking stick up for them on this.

I bet they are moving the entire network to a different location and have tons of problems with it, Sony are pretty ruined at the moment, lol.

n the weeks leading up to the Sony hack I commented to several people that all of a sudden online security was a buzz word within the news agencies. We had the worm in Iraq, the Australian PM's laptop being hacked and a load of smaller, off the cuff remark type articles about how government agencies are always being attacked online.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12891484

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-13011918

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12847072

At the same time there are growing calls in Government to "lock down" the internet and make it more regulated. There are also plans to shape traffic based on corporate deals between ISPs and online companies.

Of course, and quite rightly so, the majority of people do not want Governments poking its nose around the internet and influencing, in one way or another, a very free and democratic service.

"the best way to control a populace is through fear and discord" John W. Whitehead

Do you think its at all possible that anonymous is a Government agency designed to create fear and uncertainty in our overly reliant online world? Create fear so as to impose new governing rules online.

I find it hard to understand how this seemingly unstructured organisation can initiate a "very complicated hack". Further more, I find it hard to believe that not even the FBI can trace these guys down, but film studios and music companies are able to track down, with ease, people sharing music/films. and why would someone apparently leave a file on Sony's servers implicating anonymous? Is it to throw the authorities off the scent, or is it a carefully constructed attempt to demonise anonymous and portray them as online terrorists, thus getting the public on side with some radical changes to how we browse the internet, all under the guise of "protecting online users". It has been done before (weapons of mass descruction).

...just a thought

As you all know I read and listen to conspiracy theories/theorists quite a bit. Well, several months ago when the worm hit Irans supposed nuclear infrastructure (not Iraqs), the US Government was considering championing complete control of the internet to prevent things like this hack. This is one way to scare people into giving more power to the Government, just like September 11 did.

Did you know that at the same time as Obama released his birth certificate, Ben Bernanke (federal reserve chairman) was giving the first ever official press conference on the Feds standpoint, and on several important issues?
1. The US Dollar, and the recession in America,
2. The Worlds economy,
3. The standpoint of the US dollar as the Worlds backup currency, 4. the AAA rating for the Americans borrowing.

All this went completely under the radar of the Worlds press, because the distraction of Obama's nationality worked.

Is this Sony hack the same? Is the US Government using the same tactic to prevent people from seeing machinations that are really going on, a plan to control the internet completely?

I know people think its stupid, or that I'm crazy for believing in such things, but I dont care because if I'm wrong I look stupid, but if I'm right... the world is a very different place from what you think it is... I hope in 5-10years time I look stupid, at least my drugs, food, shirts with wrap-around sleeves, and lodgings will be free.

@Sy, Sony have stated that they are moving from a co-lo data center to their own data center.
I also like the part where he says that it's unbelievable that the FBI cannot track down the hacker, yet movie and music companies can track down filesharers.
Although it's a lot harder to track the hacker, there will always be fingerprints, just ask Garry Mcclintock.
