Still down nearly 5 hours later. I can only hope (for Sony's sake) that PSN won't be down over easter.

over the past few days ive not managed to get on first time, generally i boot the console and it logs in straight away, on second manual attempt it works

do you think anonymous are cocking about again? it would be a bit of a pain if it was down but im busy cleaning today, then im off to the anual pub quiz, work tomorrow and saturday and parents are coming over the weekend, plus im seeing peter kay monday so plenty to distract me
An explosion now and then is nice. Keeps the mind sharp,

Rumours abound that PSN has completely crashed. If so it could be days before service rusumes as normal.

@Pud, ode to a social life... call yourself a gamer? Pah! :))

sony's blog is pathetic... they're not admitting to anything.
We’re aware certain functions of PlayStation Network are down. We will report back here as soon as we can with more information. We will also provide updates when we can via our http://www.twitter.com/PlayStationEU twitter feed.

Thank you for your patience.

Update from Sony:
As you are no doubt aware, the current emergency outage is continuing this afternoon and all Sony Online Network services remain unavailable. Our support teams are investigating the cause of the problem, including the possibility of targeted behaviour by an outside party. If the reported Network problems are indeed caused by such acts, we would like to once again thank our customers who have borne the brunt of the attack through interrupted service.

Our engineers are continuing to work to restore and maintain the services, and we appreciate our customers’ continued support. For further information, please refer to updates on PlayStation.com, here on PlayStation.Blog and via our @PlayStationEU twitter feed.

Dont bother going to the blog site, it's unbelievably slow, so it's getting some serious hammer.

But the suggestion that Annonymous are behind the attack is worrying for several reasons:
1. They have compromised the security
2. they are able to mount an attack of such sufficient size to shut down PSN world wide for many hours
3. If annonymous have compromised security then it's jail time for who ever the offenders are, DDoS is frowned upon by the law, but cicumventing security is against the law in many countries.
4. Are your credit card details safe?

LOL, what world do you live in?
Banks get hacked - YES banks, online services, play.com has been hacked several times, if it's on the network that connected to the internet - it's vulnerable.
